2018 Volvo XC40 Full Review and Comparison

Volvo's newest CUV is also their most impressive in several ways. Since 2016, all Volvo's new products have been closely related so when the XC90 proved to be a solid luxury SUV, it was logical it's close relatives would be tough competitors as well. The new XC40 on the other hand uses an entirely new platform, one designed specifically for small vehicles. After the success of the SPA platform vehicles, many in the automotive press were wondering if Volvo would be able to knock another one out of the park, and the answer is yes. Volvo's new XC40 and CMA platform prove that we're seeing a renaissance, not a "one hit wonder." Part of what makes the XC40 so impressive is the segment in which it competes. The sub-compact luxury CUV segment in America contains no RWD based vehicles at this time. This puts Volvo's FWD based XC40 on equal footing with the big boys from Mercedes and BMW from the start. On top of that Volvo gives us the most standard power in the segment, highest level of standard equipment, and oddly enough, one of the lowest base prices. Coupled with some of the best driving dynamics, a sexy exterior, plenty of premium options and an upcoming EV and plug-in hybrid model, the XC40 is quite simply the best small luxury crossover you can buy. The only question left is: can Volvo build enough of them? More videos: Best cars in 2016: Upcoming reviews: AOA on Facebook: The Mountain Garden:

2019 Volvo XC40 Interior, Exterior and Drive

Volvo's new subcompact luxury SUV will offer a lot of firsts for the company. It will be the first time Volvo has offered an SUV this small, and it will be the first vehicle in Volvo's lineup to offer a unique ownership plan called Care by Volvo. At launch, there will be two versions of the XC40 available: the T5 Momentum and the T5 R-Design. Both use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (248 horsepower, 258 lb-feet of torque), an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Many of the differences between the two are aesthetic, though the R-Design does receive a few more conveniences. models and features The T5 Momentum comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, rearview parking camera and rain-sensing wipers. Inside you'll find leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver seat, USB outlets for the front and back seats, a 12.3-inch display in place of a traditional gauge cluster, and a 9-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. Wi-Fi connectivity and Volvo On Call app integration are also included. Volvo On Call lets you lock, unlock and start your car from your phone, as well as access emergency services, sync calendars and navigation destinations (in nav-equipped cars), set up maintenance appointments, and even have items delivered to the trunk of your vehicle. On top of an extensive list of passive safety features, Volvo has also included quite a few active safety features. The XC40 comes standard with a forward collision warning and automatic braking system that detects cars, pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. There's also lane keeping assist, distance alert, hill descent control and hill start assist, road sign information and even rear collision warning, which works to mitigate rear crashes. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional extras on the T5 Momentum. Optional equipment includes a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, navigation, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, active headlights, a 360-degree camera, parking assist, front and rear parking sensors, and a panoramic moonroof. Most notably, the Premium package adds adaptive cruise control, dual-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad, power-folding rear seats, a power front passenger seat, proximity entry, a hands-free tailgate and some interior storage upgrades. Upgrading to the T5 R-Design gets you quite a few aesthetic tweaks both inside and out, including unique leather upholstery and a contrasting roof and mirrors. You also get a sport-tuned chassis, 19-inch wheels, foglights, a hands-free tailgate, proximity entry, power-adjustable passenger seat, dual-zone climate control with a cooled glovebox, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, paddle shifters and navigation. competition The XC40 has the advantage of being the newest vehicle in its segment. The BMW X1 offers strong performance and handling and a roomy interior for the class, though the ride might be too firm for some. For an even sportier experience, there's the Mercedes-Benz GLA, which has an extensive list of optional upgrades but a stiff ride. Land Rover's Range Rover Evoque boasts an impressively designed interior and a high level of luxury, with the concomitant price premium. availability Production of the XC40 will begin in November, and customers opting for the Care by Volvo subscription package can pre-order now. Deliveries in the U.S. are not expected until early next year. pricing The 2019 XC40 T5 Momentum will start at $36,195, and the T5 R-Design will start at $38,695. Fully loaded, the XC40 T5 R-Design will break $45,000. ►Auto Club-TV is an auto channel (Car Design Drive Offroad Test Drive Testing Driving Features Review) Discover all new cars before anyone else!
