Mazda MX-5 RF 2017 review | first Australian drive video

Malcolm Flynn road tests and reviews the Mazda MX-5 RF with specs, fuel consumption and verdict at its Australian launch. Read Malcolm's full review here: http://carsgui.de/2jOLL0s See more at the CarsGuide MX-5 hub: http://carsgui.de/1T5Ono5 Check out other convertibles here: http://carsgui.de/1U2NRGe - - - - - - - - - - People have been talking about the idea of a coupe version of the mx5 since the first arrived in 1989, and this car behind me LOOKS like they've finally done it. However, flick the switch on the dash at speeds up to 10km/h, and it does a pretty cool transformers manoeuvre and the coupe turns into a targa top. Mazda calls it the RF, or retractable fastback, which takes the place of the old folding hardtop model, and pretty much promises the best of both worlds between a coupe and convertible. You can still buy the soft top version that continues to win people’s hearts, but the RF has been added to broaden the MX-5's appeal to those who want a coupe, and anyone concerned about the security of leaving their car parked outdoors. So it costs a bit more, is a bit heavier and only comes with the bigger 2.0-litre engine, but given how magical the soft top is, the RF should still be pretty good. And it is good. In isolation, you'd be hard pressed to pick the extra weight, with the same brilliant steering and balanced, playful chassis characteristics which intentionally has more bodyroll than you'd expect to add to the fun factor. Mazda engineers have put a lot of work into maintaining its stiffness, and improving With the roof up, it's almost as quet as a regular fixed roof car in here, and a cut above the soft top version. And with the roof down, the rear bulkhead and wind buffer allow you to hold normal conversations up to highway speeds, but I reckon there's a bit more wind noise than in the soft top. Given the 2.0-litre doesn’t have a turbo like most cars these days, you do have to rev it to get the best out of it. If you're a keen driver this is a real joy with the manual transmission, as it’s got one of the shortest and sharpest shifts in the business. Adding the RF to the MX-5 lineup is like adding adding chocolate chips to chocolate ice cream. There will always be a market for regular chocolate ice cream, but most people will probably go for choc chips if given the chance. The RF is still a cracking drive, and the extra versatility and sexy looks are pretty welcome. CarsGuide - Buy cars. Sell cars. Simple.
